Tai Chi

Tai chi teaches the body and mind to relax through soft, co-ordinated movement. Tai chi can be beautiful to watch and may look gentle, but there is a soft strength and power in the movements. As well as learning the form, we also practice pushing exercises with a partner where we learn to listen through touch and to develop sensitivity.

I started practicing Lee Style Tai Chi in 2000, and in 2011 reached the standard of Second Tengchi (equivalent to second degree black sash). In 2006 I travelled to China to train at the Southern Shaolin Temple in Foshan, where I learnt the Chen 56-step form.

Currently I am learning with Cloud Gate Tai chi and Qigong.

I’ve taught classes for the Birmingham Active Parks scheme, for Saheli Womens Group in Balsall Heath and for Ace Resource Centre in Nechells. I’m not currently teaching classes.

Kung Fu and Kickboxing

Learning Kung Fu and Kickboxing is a great way to improve your fitness, co-ordination, flexibility and mental and physical agility. It can improve confidence, and teach values of respect, self discipline and perseverance.

I began training in Lau Gar Kung Fu in 1998, reaching black sash in 2009. I fought in semi-contact competitions for a number of years before coming to focus more on the technical and health aspects of the art, including learning Bagua Daoyin with Master He Jinghan. Bagua Daoyin is a system of foundation exercises designed to open up and connect the body, stretch the tendons and ligaments and increase internal awareness, in preparation for bagua training.
