Zero balancing is a deeply relaxing form of bodywork which uses stretches and gentle pressure to the bones at specific points. The pressure is gently held to create still points, or fulcrums. Zero balancing uses a distinctive type of touch which is clear and unobtrusive.

How does it work?

Zero balancing works on the understanding that energy flows through the body in relationship with its structure. Through releasing tension in and around the bones and joints, a zero balancing session encourages energy to flow more smoothly and evenly through the structure of the body.

Zero balancing focuses on the joints that are concerned with transmission of force through the skeleton. It evaluates and improves the function of these joints, working towards optimum balance and efficiency in their relationship with the body as a whole.

If the skeleton is poorly aligned and off-centre, our muscles become overly involved in supporting weight which causes a build up of muscular tension. This reduces ease, flexibility and range of movement and is the primary cause of many body pain problems and repetitive injuries. A well aligned skeleton means the weight of the body is supported and the muscles don’t hold excessive tension.

Interface touch

In Zero Balancing, we touch ‘at interface’, and this is one of the things that distinguishes Zero Balancing from other forms of touch therapy. So what is meant by interface?

In interface touch, there is a clear energetic boundary between the practitioner and the client, and no energy is exchanged between the two people. This doesn’t mean there is distance or lack of connection, but that the practitioner doesn’t add to or take away from the client’s energy.

The advantage of these clear boundaries is that the touch itself feels very clear to receive. The client doesn’t feel that they are being interfered with in any way, and there is a sense of safety and respect. The practitioner is focusing on the point of connection and simply feeling what is there without judging it.

Interface touch is particularly valuable where there are boundary issues, maybe through having been emotionally or physically overridden in the past. The receiver starts to get a clearer sense of their true boundary, as the focus moves away from the world and back to themselves.

How will it make me feel?

When we ‘find’ our bones and trust our skeleton to support us, we feel lighter, clearer, and more connected. We may start to feel more present in our bodies, finding new ways of moving that are more efficient and less effort.

As we start to become more aligned within ourselves, the body’s natural capacity for self healing increases. When energy that was locked up in muscle tension is freed up, we can use it for other things and may have a feeling of renewed energy.

When energy is integrated with the bones we get a deeper sense of connection with our core selves. We may become more aware of what we really want, and find that we are better able to cope with stressful situations.
